Omega-3 fatty acids (EPA, DHA) and Omega-6 fatty
acids (GLA) each play a crucial role in maintaining
optimal mental and physical health. While EPA is
generally recognized for its cardiovascular applications,
and DHA is known to support brain development and
learning, EPA and DHA occur together in nature, and
should always be taken in tandem for their synergistic
benefits. GLA is a good complement to fish oils because
together they help reduce the synthesis of
pro-inflammatory prostaglandins.
Many countries recommend adults consume at least 1-2 grams of Omega-3s
daily. Although there is not yet a “daily value” established in the US, the FDA has
approved a qualified health claim for fish oils. The White House advocates the
consumption of Omega-3 fatty acids, and the American Heart Association
recommends EPA and DHA from fish to patients with elevated triglycerides and
heart disease.
